Childhood Neglect and Abuse

Childhood abuse is any action by another person – adult or child – that causes significant harm to a child. It can be physical, sexual or emotional but just as often about a lack of love, care and attention. Children who experience childhood abuse or neglect often feel responsible, guilty or shameful about what happened to them. Sometimes abuse and neglect is not recognized as such at the time, but becomes obvious later in life. This complex legacy can result in pervasive feelings of depression or anxiety as adults, and a fragile sense of self. Both Jess and Denise are experienced in working with such issues. Denise in particular has worked for many years with children who experienced inadequate care, either through neglect or abuse, or both.
